Getting Things Done ...for
Ohio Citizen Corps

by: Amanda Cowgill, Ohio AmeriCorps
VISTA Leader

The Ohio Community Service Council was granted a three-year AmeriCorps VISTA project in October of last year, naming the project Supporting Ohio Citizen Corps.  In this first year, VISTA members have been forming Regional Work Groups to gather existing disaster preparedness materials so resources can be distributed to organizations throughout the member’s Lead Volunteer Center region.  The members will also be conducting at least eight Volunteer Reception Center Trainings and providing standardized Volunteer Orientations to prospective and registered volunteers. Yet another task the members have been assigned is to facilitate representation of low-income and special needs populations on County Citizen Corps Councils.

Here is a recap of the progress made since the first two members came on board in December and the third in January:

  • 182 new volunteers, half of which are baby-boomers, gave 361 hours of their time for events and/or trainings;
  • 51 presentations or trainings were conducted by VISTA members with over 1,000 participants;
  • $300 in non-cash resources was developed by VISTA members for their project.

Three new VISTA members will be placed with our program in July and two new members in August.

AmeriCorps Week 2008 ...
We Got it Done!

The second annual AmeriCorps Week was a major success -
thanks to the tens of thousands of AmeriCorps members, alumni, staff, partners, and friends who joined in shining the spotlight on the extraordinary service and accomplishments of AmeriCorps.

From building homes and helping communities recover from disasters to restoring parks and signing up volunteers, AmeriCorps members and alumni made the second annual AmeriCorps Week a major success. During the week, they took time to thank community partners and recruit more Americans into service. Millions of people learned about AmeriCorps through school presentations, recruitment fairs, service projects, and media coverage during the week. AmeriCorps Week was also a time to say “Thank You” to all volunteers. The President, Congress, Governors, Mayors, and people who’ve benefited from the helping hands of an AmeriCorps member all took time to salute the men and women of AmeriCorps for their dedication and accomplishments.

In Ohio - On Tuesday, May 13, the Ohio Senate presented a Resolution to Ohio AmeriCorps saluting this special week and honoring the great service being provided each day by Ohio AmeriCorps members (see photo below).

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION
Block Watch Coordinator Named
Volunteer of the Year
Westerville City resident Leisa Tremper was recently named volunteer of the year by the Ohio Crime Prevention Association (OCPA) for her 15 years of work as a block watch coordinator in her neighborhood.
news
(L to R): Officer Sheri Robertson, the 2007 President of OCPA presents the award to Leisa Tremper

On March 28, 2007, Leisa was made aware of a burglary in her neighborhood. She proceeded to spread the word by sending informational flyers to over 300 homes, asking people to call her with any information. A neighbor called and said a man had knocked forcefully at her door, scaring her. She did go to the door, but talked to him behind a closed door. She secured a vehicle description and called police with the information. On April 4, a call came in to Dispatch about a burglary in progress a few miles from a burglary the previous week. As Detective Schwartz was on his way to the scene, he relayed the vehicle information provided to him. The vehicle, matching the description, was spotted by an officer and stopped. The offenders were arrested and further investigation revealed that the offenders had committed at least four burglaries in Westerville and at least 10 others in Central Ohio. Several stolen guns and other valuables were recovered from the suspects. The citizen volunteer was later able to identify both suspects from a photo line-up, further helping the case for court. After the incident, Leisa took her own initiative to recruit people in the surrounding areas to start their own neighborhood watch program – she received a tremendous response! Seven additional neighborhood watches were organized as a result of her efforts.

Congratulations Leisa ...
keep up the great work!

For the 8th consecutive year, Ohio led the nation in the number of volunteer service projects planned for Make A Difference Day Ohio (MDDO) – Saturday, October 27. Over 1,000 projects were conducted throughout the state, involving nearly 40,000 volunteers. “Make A Difference Day, the largest national day of volunteering (always held the last Saturday in October), is a catalyst that brings people together for projects that often extend beyond one day a year,” said Mrs. Strickland. “Volunteerism makes a community a better place because people help one another with no thought of reward or personal gain.  It provides us all with an opportunity to do something greater than ourselves.
